The council aimed to provide all Rotorua households, including rural and lakes areas, with convenient, economical, and sustainable waste services. Feedback showed that rural residents wanted a service similar to what urban households receive.
Two options were proposed for Rural household waste collection
This was done with input from the Rural Community Board, Smart Environmental, and community focus groups.
Option 1:
Kerbside rubbish and recycling collection with wheelie bins and a crate for glass.
The estimated cost was $350–$450 per property per year. Council planned to assess refuse service rates as part of the 2018-28 Long-term Plan to determine how costs would be distributed across the district. Feedback was encouraged on whether to pay indicated costs or equalise costs across rural, lakes, and urban areas.
Option 2:
No service, resulting in no extra charges to rates.
However, this would mean the current temporary collection areas, landfill drop-offs, or bag collection points would not be available.
