Council approved the final plan in February 2021.

Background

We are proposing targets and actions to address climate change for the Rotorua District.

Human activity has impacted on our atmosphere. There is already evidence of climate change effects, including raised temperatures and sea levels and increased frequency of extreme weather events. Our Rotorua Climate Action Plan identifies actions we can take to mitigate (reduce) the emissions created in our district and proposes emissions reduction targets. It also identifies the risks our district faces from climate change and the actions that need to be taken to adapt to the expected changes.

The draft Plan has been developed with the input of partners and stakeholders. We intend that it will guide decision making towards a more resilient Rotorua, by locking in a lower-carbon way of doing things. It will be a living document that will evolve to reflect work underway, future planning and our progress towards addressing climate change. This work will be led by Council, our partners and the wider community.
