Consultation closed

Rotorua Lakes Council opted to continue with the strengthening and restoration project.

Thank you for taking the time to have your say.

Community consultation showed 85% of respondents in favour of proceeding with the project to fully restore and re-open the building as a museum.

Following this consultation, the Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting elected members voted in favour of proceeding with the strengthening and re-opening of the Rotorua Museum, subject to certain conditions being met, aimed at minimising financial risk.

📄Background

Rotorua Lakes Council sought feedback on Rotorua Museum Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa Strengthening and Restoration Options. Elected members wanted to hear from as many parts of our community and country as possible to help guide their decision-making.

We invited the community, as stakeholders, to provide feedback on their preferred option. The Strengthening and Restoration Options consultation document set out three possible options for the project.

These were:

  1. Follow the 2018-2028 Long-term Plan decision: Continue to fully restore the building and reopen as a Museum
  2. Staged Project:
    1. Stage One: Fully strengthen the building
    2. Stage Two: Complete restoration and fit-out to reopen the building as a Museum
  3. Find Alternative: Find an alternative location for the Museum and its services.

Further information on the history of the land, building and project can be found in the project briefing report under the Key Documents section.
