Speed limit changes approved by Council

29 June 2021

Councillors agreed at the full Council meeting on 28 June 2021 to approve speed limit changes for all 56 local roads that were proposed as part of the 2021 Speed Limit Review.

Following consultation, council officers amended a number of speed reductions to align with feedback received from the community. This included reducing speed limits to 20km/h for some reserve access roads and 40km/h for certain rural roads. Additionally, Cookson Road and Hawthornden Drive speed limits were further reduced to 60km/h.

A notable change is the reduction of the speed limit on Tarawera Road to 50km/h. Electronic variable speed limit signs will be installed outside several rural schools.

The decision considered 184 written submissions, with most favoring lower speed limits.
