BOPRC has approved the final conditions for the Rotorua comprehensive stormwater catchment consent, combining 39 separate discharge consents into one. Catchment Management Plans will be developed to ensure a more consistent and coordinated approach to stormwater management across the district.

Background

Rotorua Lakes Council currently holds 39 resource consents for the discharge of stormwater within the Rotorua Urban Area (RUA) catchment. Council is required by Bay of Plenty Regional Council rules to consolidate these and apply to them for one single comprehensive consent that covers all of the urban catchment.

The consolidated consent would then be managed through a comprehensive catchment management plan, providing more streamlined and consistent management of stormwater discharge and associated works within the area.

It is essential RLC provides a reliable stormwater network to minimise the effects of adverse weather events on people, property and the district’s economy. Additionally, waterways are of great significance to iwi and ensuring that the mauri of Lake Rotorua is not affected by poor quality stormwater discharge is fundamental to the effectiveness of this network.

Rotorua Lakes Council has applied for this comprehensive stormwater catchment consent with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. The Regional Council was expected to publicly notify about this application in May 2023, as is required under the Resource Management Act. At that stage the public was invited to make formal submissions on the application.
